Class meets in VOC 112 Daily 9:00 - 9:50
Text: Intermediate Algebra , Book Three Custom Edition for LCC
Intermediate Algebra: This course has a prerequisite of Elementary Algebra with a C or better or its equivalent at some other school.
The course is split into two parts.
The first three credits, designated Math 098 covers:
Systems of Equations
Compound Equations and In equalities
Equations and Inequalities containing absolute value signs
Rational and Radical Expressions
The last two credits, designated Math 099 covers:
Quadratic Equations
Complex Numbers
Exponentials and Logarithms
Evaluation process: Your grade will be determined by finding a weighted average of four different sets of scores.
Quizzes will count 15% of your grade, homework will count 15%, Module tests will count 50%, and the final exam will count 20%.
The final grade will be awarded according to the schedule:
Homework: Homework will be done on-line. The site is called MyMathLab and you can sign on here. Answers to many of the questions you might have about MyMathLab can be found in this link. The assignments shown on this web site are the corresponding numbers if you opt to buy the loose-leaf copy of the book. On the web site the numbering starts at 1 and runs consecutively. The due date for the homework is the review date for that module.
Tests: Tests will be given in the proctoring center which is in Main 128. Each test will be in the center for approximately three days. You are responsible for finding a time to take the tests. Tests must be taken on the dates on the schedule unless I am contacted prior to the test time so that an alternate time can be found. If you miss a test, it is your responsibility to make arrangements for taking late tests.
The department has instituted a policy that credit for the class cannot be given if any module test has a score of less than 70%.
If you score less than 70% on an exam, you will have to do additional work on that module and take a retake on that exam.
This must be completed within one week of last date of the exam in question.
The maximum score you can receive on a retake is 80%.
Final Exam: The final exam will be cumulative. It is a good idea to keep your other tests and use them as a study guide for the final exam.
Calculators: Everyone will need to have and know how to use a scientific calculator.
Attend class. Poor attendance is one of the main reasons students do not pass math classes.
Tutoring Center : Tutoring can be found in the library building. check their web page for times and tutors.
Work with others: Try working with other students in the class. You can learn a lot from each other, but don't fall into the trap of just copying someone else's work.
View the video tapes: There are video tapes in the library that cover topics in algebra.
Try using the many resources that come with your electronic book and the homework program.
If you need help do NOT wait. Get help that day! Try one of these methods, or one of your own, but don't let yourself fall behind.
