Cell phones:
You should not use cell phones or other communication devises during class.
There should be no texting, calling, and so on during class time. That includes leaving class to recieve or place calls. I do understand that sometimes there are exceptional circumstances.
(A few years ago I had a member of the fire department in class who kept their phone on vibrate in case they had were called away for some emergency.)
If there is something like that going on, let me know, and set your phone to a mode that does not disrupt class.
Classroom deportment: You should not carry on side conversations, pass notes, etc. Let's face it, such behavior is pretty Junior High.
Attendance: While attendance will not be used to calculate your grade, it is in the least highly recommended. Having more than a very few absences in a quarter often makes the difference in passing or not passing a math class. Further, if there is any in-class activity that you miss, you may not get the chance to make that up.
Cheating, plagarism: I encourage you to work with others, and for many it is less stressful and more convenient than coming to my office or going to the tutors. In some upper level math courses there may not be any tutors for your subject. This is often a mutually beneficial effort, but sometimes you may find you are really helping tutor a classmate. If you are the one doing the tutoring, the experience will help cement the concepts in your mind.
But there is a difference between working with others and copying, which IS plagarism. If you are caught cheating, as a minimum you will get a zero for that assignment/quiz/test ... . In an extreme case, you would fail the course.
Need for accomodation: Students with disabilities who believe that they may need accommodations in this class are encouraged to contact the Disabilities Support Services Office at 442-2340 as soon as possible to better ensure that such accommodations are implemented in a timely manner, or see the Special Populations Coordinator in the Disabilities Support Services Office in the Admissions Building.
