LIGHT PALS
This spring we started a "Light Pals" correspondence with a 4th grade class in Lohrville, Iowa. In their introductory letter the students were asked to write about themselves, and the light. This attached letter is from an
Iowa student to one of the St. Helens' students.

April 2000

Dear Deanne,

My name is Mike Feddersen. I am a student at Southern Cal Schools in Lohrville, Iowa. I'm going to be 10 in April. I live in a town called Lake City. Lake City has less than 2,000 people in it.

I'm pretty fast, and I'm one of the shortest kids in my class. I'm 4'6" and I'm 72 lbs. I like football, soccer, four square, and basketball.

Iowa is a rural area. Rural is mostly farmland. Here almost all you grow is corn and soy beans.

The light here changes alot, one day it's sunny the next it's cloudy. I like it when I go outside and it's really sunny out. Its already 50', 60's and 70's out. Well I've got to go, by.

Your Light Pal,

The students painted outside with watercolors on postcards, and noted
place, time, and weather like I do in my daily drawings.

SHADOW PUPPETS

We studied shadow puppets while we were learning about light and shadow. Each group sat in a circle with one member beginning a story with a sentence about light. We went around the circle adding and building character and plot until we had a rough outline. We refined our story, and then designed our shadow puppets.

Adventures of the Cloud Giants
A Shadow Puppet Play
(condensed version)
by Jon, Amanda, Heather, Des, James, Tiffany, and Latisha

Once upon a time there were cloud giants wondering where the light was when all of a sudden the sun popped out of the clouds. Flowers grew really tall, and there was no room for people to build their houses. Soon the cloud giants noticed a blue, white, green, and brown planet getting closer to them. It took them over, and they were in a dark space.

Soon the planet landed on earth, and everyone started playing chess. They didn't really know the rules so they hunted all over the earth for the manual. They found it in shreds and decided to do something else with their lives. They got on a light beam and flew into the universe which took them back to their clouds.

They were tired when they got back home, and decided to take a nap. Meanwhile, the blue, white, green, and brown planet shot a laser beam that transported them into a black hole. They loved their new home, and wished they had found it earlier.
