LOWER COLUMBIA COLLEGE

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

SEASON OUTLOOK

The 1998-99 Red Devil women's basketball team returns three players from last season's 5th placing in the NWAACC tournament and an overall 27-6 record. The 1997-98 Red Devils were undefeated in Western Region League play and Regional Champions with a 14-0 record. Last season's team was also ranked #1 nationally for the WBCA Team academic award with an overall g.p.a of 3.59. The three sophomores for the 1998-99 season must provide leadership and a winning attitude to the six freshmen joining the program to repeat the success of last year's Red Devil team.

Brooke Sellards is the only returning starter for the Red Devils. Brooke will return to the back court at the off-guard position, where she runs the floor and is the team's strongest defender. Complimenting Sellards in the back court is Tori VanBrocklin who is a great scorer and leader for the team. Erin Dahlquist returns in the wing position. Erin has increased her foot speed and scoring abilities.

Leading off the newcomers for the Red Devils is Joni Lowe (Castle Rock H.S.). Joni is versatile and will play in the small forward and wing positions. Joni is very strong and a consistent scorer. Allison Mattila (Warrenton H.S, OR), Wendy Garrison (Hoquiam H.S.), and Amanda Johnston (Kelso H.S.) will aid Lowe in the front court. The front court talented players must develop and learn a quicker and stronger style of basketball.

Newcomers in the back court include Shekinah Brazzle (Benson H.S., OR) and Melody Abel (R.A. Long H.S.). Brazzle brings quickness and defensive pressure. Abel adds scoring and a positive attitude.

The Red Devils are young and talented. The 1998-99 team must learn to play at another level, but have the ability to be successful. The latter part of the season should bring exciting basketball to Myklebust gym.
